A Complete Review of Semiconductor Lasers And a Few Words About What You Can Do With a 5.6 W Semiconductor Laser

This is a detailed article about popular inexpensive semiconductor lasers and about what you can engrave and cut using a 5.6 W semiconductor laser, installed on a 3D printer or CNC machine. The laser diode is a solid-state source of coherent radiation. In this case it is a solid crystal of aluminate gallium, a source of the laser beam with the wavelength of about 445 nm. The basic components of the laser are a laser diode, a cooling system and a power driver of the laser diode. The main trick in their production is how to make the driver as compact as possible and at the same time fail-proof, how to ensure sufficient cooling of the laser diode without the crystal degradation. That is, a laser, ready for operation, has not just an energy source but also a power driver and a cooling system. We are lucky in this, as diode lasers are rather small and light unlike huge CO2 and fiber lasers. It is easy to install a conventional diode laser on any 3D printer or CNC machine. Besides, the market offers a variety of DIY kits of the makeblock plotter XY 2.0 type, which are also suitable for laser installation.   Standard installation hardware is used for most of lasers, though sometimes on...

What’s your secret evil plan? Are you looking for world domination by building a machine that

What’s your secret evil plan? Are you looking for world domination by building a machine that can truly replicate itself? Or are you just tired of winding motor rotors and other coils by hand? Either way, this automated coil winder is something you’re probably going to need. We jest in part, but it’s true that closing the loop on self-replicating machines means being able to make things like motors. And for either brushed or brushless motors, that means turning spools of wire into coils of some sort. [Mr Innovative]’s winder uses a 3D-printed tube to spin magnet wire around a rotor core. A stepper motor turns the spinner arm a specified number of times, pausing at the end so the operator can move the wire to make room for the next loop. The rotor then spins to the next position on its own stepper motor, and the winding continues. That manual step needs attention to make this a fully automated system, and we think the tension of the wire needs to be addressed so the windings are a bit tighter. But it’s still a nice start, and it gives us some ideas for related coil-winding projects. Of course, not every motor needs wound coils. After all, brushless PCB motors with etched coils ar...

Using Market Access funds, the U.S. Grains Council hosted a six-member team of Taiwan feed industry

Using Market Access funds, the U.S. Grains Council hosted a six-member team of Taiwan feed industry buyers to North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota during Export Exchange in October 2018. The itinerary included visits to corn farms, hog farms, ethanol plants, grain elevators, feed mills, transloading facilities and attending the main Export Exchange conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The main purpose of the program was to help international customers better understanding the production, quality and applications of U.S. grains and dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS), and to educate them on how to use more U.S. products in their feeding systems. Export Exchange 2018 offered overseas attendees a unique opportunity to meet and build relationships with domestic suppliers of corn, DDGS, sorghum, barley and other commodities. More than 200 international buyers and end-users of coarse grains and co-products from more than 35 countries along with about 300 U.S. industry participants attended the event. Members of the Taiwanese buyers team negotiated with suppliers to purchase 65,000 metric tons of corn and 9,200 tons of DDGS, with a combined export value of $13.9 million....

Like much of modern trade, the coffee industry has a complicated record when it comes to

Like much of modern trade, the coffee industry has a complicated record when it comes to environmental impacts. Coffee’s journey from the trees of Ethiopia or Brazil to your local cafe is long and undeniably polluting, from the cargo ships that transport the green beans to our shores, to the gas and electricity used to roast, grind, and brew your favorite drink, to the huge amount of landfill waste generated by the average coffee shop. At the same time, coffee does some tangible good. Coffee trees and their shade crops provide protection for migrating birds and serve as carbon sinks. Oftentimes, schools and hospitals are built with proceeds from green coffee sales. And coffee shops have become important community assets—as meeting halls, organizing spaces, or art galleries. So what’s coffee-loving consumer to do? Enormous conglomerates are the main eco-culprits. You can’t personally control the intricacies of the global coffee trade. Still, there are a few simple ways to mitigate your own contribution, and feel a bit better about that morning buzz. If you’re a home coffee brewer, this is one of the simplest and most effective ways to decrease your coffee footprint. Instead of pi...

Dust in the wind, dude: how Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure made Hollywood look stupid The Telegraph Poppy Search Icon Save Facebook icon Twitter icon Instagram icon LinkedIn icon Facebook icon Twitter icon Instagram icon LinkedIn icon

According to Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, the philosophies of the distant future – 700 years into the future, to be precise – will be built of the musical teachings of two teenage slacker doofuses (“We are Wild Stallyns!”). And why not? Thirty years after they first punctuated their bodacious sentences with some sweet air-guitar riffs, the mantra of Bill S. Preston Esq. and Ted Theodore Logan is something we could all do with a bit more of. Be excellent to each other, indeed. But between an out-there time travel concept and financial disaster, Bill and Ted almost never made it to the big screen, let alone inspire the future of humanity. What happened in Salt Lake, didn’t stay in Salt Lake, as solar stocks underperformed the broader

What happened in Salt Lake, didn’t stay in Salt Lake, as solar stocks underperformed the broader market in September. The Guggenheim Solar ETF (TAN) decreased 3.9% vs. the S&P 500 and Dow, which gained 1.7% and 1.9%, respectively. Solar Power International was well attended by hundreds of investor groups. The TAN was flat during SPI 2017 and down 3% during SPI 2018, while it decreased more than 6% during this year’s event, wiping out gains from the first half of September. Several factors are responsible for stock declines during and after SPI, including a weaker outlook for China in the first half of 2020 and a potential price decrease for coal power. ENPH and to a lesser extent, SEDG, are seeing profit take sharp returns year-to-date and potential new entrants such as Generac could create competition. The weaker U.S. economic outlook and a broader sell-off of growth stocks looms, and investors want to lock in profits before 2020. Stocks with big gains saw the largest declines. But it’s not all bad news. Roth Capital Partners hosted 16 companies at its seventh investor symposium at SPI and conducted investor booth tours with a range of distributors, developers, inverter com...

How to clean an outboard motor carburettor step-by-step

If you have trouble with a small outboard motor it can often be attributed to the fuel. David Parker describes how he saved a lot of money with a careful strip-down and clean of the carburettor Changing the fuel helped but did not solve the problem, and the engine still would not idle. I then found a gasket lying at the bottom of the engine bay which explained why the carburettor leaked badly when I laid the motor tiller side down It only took me a few trips of rowing my trusty tender up the busy River Hamble to my main boat to make me realise how much I missed the convenience and ease of my little outboard engine. Unfortunately it had developed a gearbox problem that was not going to be straightforward to fix. A friend kindly loaned me a Honda 2hp to tide me over, but I never feel comfortable borrowing other people’s equipment. I always worry something might happen to it, so I decided I needed to sort myself out with a replacement engine pretty quickly. However, it turned out to be a bit of a case of ‘buy in haste, repent at leisure’. I saw an advert for a Suzuki DF2.5 on the Isle of Wight, the same lightweight engine as I’d had before. So I made a bit of a rushed trip over in...

More than 150 teens have fallen ill from vaping. Is it enough to make their peers stop?

It did not take long for word that people were falling ill from vaping to spread among teenagers. The news appeared on Snapchat, where worried adolescents read the grim details of the mysterious illness and shared them with their peers in group text messages. Then there were the photos of young patients that proliferated on Instagram and Twitter showing them listless in hospital beds, tubes snaking from their mouths. “The news says it’s bad for your health,” a high school senior in Cary, N.C., recalls telling his friends in a group chat. He urged them to stop. But these were the same forums where some teens were starting to parody their classmates for quitting vaping, and where high school vape dealers — who peddled products containing nicotine and others containing marijuana — were advertising their wares. The posts offer a glimpse into the contradictory forces teens face: the draw of nicotine and marijuana, the pressure to fit in and be cool, the inclination to rebel — and now the potential that vaping, which has become central to adolescent culture in some places, could cause immediate and lethal harm. Quietly, some teens admit to friends that they are unable to stop and that...

Preparing For A Lathe: How To Move 3000 Pounds Of Iron

You say to yourself, “Self, I want, nay, need a lathe”. Being a good little trooper, you then did all your research, having chosen Import or American, Imperial or Metric, and all your feed options and such. You then pulled the trigger and the machine is en route to your shop. Now what? First and foremost, you need to figure out where to put it. Sure, you probably should have done that before you bought it, and maybe a pulling a tape measure would have been a good idea. Never let pesky details like that get in the way of buying something cool, though. You can make room. How badly do you really need a refrigerator? In a pinch you could sleep under the workbench and gain all that space taken up by the bed. Get creative in your shop layout. If you bought a bench-top machine, you will of course need bench space for it. Some smaller machines, such as watchmaker’s lathes, can be stored in a cabinet and pulled out for use. Anything larger will need a permanent home, and should be bolted to the heaviest bench possible. The more mass you can inject into the system, the fewer issues you’ll have with tool chatter. Mass also damps vibrations when turning stock off-center or spinning up oddly...
