Pennsylvania State Senator Gene Yaw toured Advanced Drainage Systems’ (ADS) pipe plant, discussing fair and open

Pennsylvania State Senator Gene Yaw toured Advanced Drainage Systems’ (ADS) pipe plant, discussing fair and open competition issues. Senator Yaw visited the ADS manufacturing plant here to gain an understanding of how large diameter thermoplastic pipe is made and to discuss issues of fair and open competition for products used in federal and state projects, the use of recycled plastics in pipe manufacture and ADS’ education initiatives. ADS manufactures high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP) pipe – often used in horizontal directional drilling installations – up to 60 inches (1,524 mm) in diameter for storm water drainage and sanitary sewer systems. “It was quite an experience to see pipe that is 1.5 m in diameter being made and to find out that even a standard 6 m piece of that pipe is very strong but also light enough to be easily moved and installed by the crew on a job site,” said Senator Yaw. “When open competition is allowed, material costs for public projects can drop dramatically and also provide the best possible product. “Across the country, open competition could save $22.3 billion for storm water in pipe material costs during the next 10 years. 5 questions: After trauma, how do we heal emotionally?

But few were looking at what happens next, after the person survives the horrible injuries – from an auto accident, a shooting, a fall.  How do survivors fare mentally, after they recover physically? Richmond decided this was the area in which she wanted to work.  For her doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, she focused on recovery after serious traumatic injury that did not involve the brain or spinal cord. Now, as the Andrea B. Laporte professor of nursing and associate dean for research and innovation at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, she studies human responses to injuries.  Two decades ago, she cofounded the Penn Injury Science Center, where she is on the executive committee. In recognition of her work and her achievements, she was elected for membership to the prestigious National Academy of Medicine this year. Trauma accounts for one in 10 deaths in the world.  It’s a huge, huge health issue.  In the U.S., one out of 10 adults seeks medical care for an injury every year. Early on, I loved figuring out the injuries.  It’s like a puzzle.  It was intellectually challenging and exciting to work with an interdisciplinary team.  But the thing I real...

An international team of researchers has succeeded in measuring the current system responsible for Jupiter’s aurora.

An international team of researchers has succeeded in measuring the current system responsible for Jupiter’s aurora. Using data transmitted to Earth by NASA’s Juno spacecraft, they showed that the direct currents were much weaker than expected and that alternating currents must therefore play a special role. On Earth, on the other hand, a direct current system creates its aurora. Jupiter’s electric current system is kept going in particular by large centrifugal forces, which hurl ionized sulfur dioxide gas from the gas giant’s moon Io through the magnetosphere. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-1449240174198-2′); }); Professor Dr. Joachim Saur from the Institute of Geophysics and Meteorology at the University of Cologne was involved in the project. The article “Birkeland currents in Jupiter’s magnetosphere observed by the polar-orbiting Juno spacecraft” is published in the current issue of Nature Astronomy. Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system, has the brightest aurora, with a radiant power of 100 terawatts (100,000,000,000 kilowatts = one hundred billion KW). 100,000 power plants would ...

With a compound annual growth rate of 11.6%, the global laser market is expected to cross

With a compound annual growth rate of 11.6%, the global laser market is expected to cross $21 billion in the next five years and India will be main contributor to this growth. India has a 5% share of the more than $12 billion global laser market. With a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.6%, the global laser market is expected to cross $21 billion in the next five years and India will be main contributor to this growth (SIDEBAR, below). After 2012, the Indian laser cutting market grew tenfold, from 50 units per year to 500 units per year. Editor’s Note: Anant Deshpande, Industrial Laser Solutions Editorial Advisor for India and a contemporary of Rakesh Agarwal, offers these additional comments on the market for industrial lasers in this country. With prices for fiber laser cutting machines decreasing almost day by day, the market—which previously was focused on job shops—now includes companies making the products to have such machines in-house. The cost of the earlier machines was exorbitantly high and required trained manpower, so companies were outsourcing to job shops. However, with the drop in prices (a 1kW laser now costs under $50,000), these companies now hav...

Bromma has supplied more information on the spreaders capable of handling 53ft containers that it delivered

Bromma has supplied more information on the spreaders capable of handling 53ft containers that it delivered to Crowley Maritime in San Juan, Puerto Rico and Jaxport, Florida in 2017-18 The six spreaders were delivered in 2017-18 to two ports: three went to San Juan, Puerto Rico, for service on two new Liebherr STS cranes, and three went to Jaxport, Florida, for two existing ZPMC STS cranes. This was a kind of “triple first.” Apart from being a new type of spreader for Bromma (designated SSX53L), the Liebherr cranes in San Juan had the distinction of being the first that STS cranes that Liebherr had ever shipped fully-erect from Ireland. And the originator of the new handling business was Crowley Maritime, which had upgraded its Jaxport-San Juan service with the introduction of two new LNG-powered con-ros, replacing the previous triple decker barge and tug service. Crowley’s versatile container fleet contains 20ft, 40ft HC and 45ft HC ISO containers and 48ft and 53ft 102-in wide domestic containers. The 48ft and 53ft containers have corner castings in the end positions as well as fittings at 40ft centres. As all Crowley’s containers in the trade have fittings at ISO ...
